Tasting notes

Cinsault is a refreshingly different grape from all others we work with. It has intrigued us with it’s charming character, and as an important component for our Rosé and our blends, by adding freshness and intriguing aromatics; Cinsault is the understated star of the winery. This wine is love at first sight with it’s bright ruby color, pretty perfume and enticing fruit flavors. Distinctive aromas of ripe wild strawberries and pomegranate with savory hints that leadinto sinuous and mouthwatering cherry flavors and a supple texture. Fresh, bright and fruit forward, this is an excellent wine to pair with salmon, wild mushrooms, and charcuterie. 

Production notes

The fruit was hand harvested and transported to the winery in the early morning of October 4th. All fruit was de-stemmed with no crushing. Fermentation occurred in one 33HL Nomblot Concrete ‘cube’ with twice daily pump-overs and several small open top fermenters with manual pigeage. Pressing occurred just before dryness and the wine was barreled in a blend of neutral 225 L French oak barrels. Bottling occurred August 2017 after 9 months in barrel. This vintage contains 100% free run juice.

Cinsault originated in southern France where it is usually blended with Grenache and Carignan. Small plantings exist in the New World with very recent additions to Washington State. At McKinley Springs Vineyard, Cinsault is late ripening and usually one of the last grapes we pick each harvest. It is planted at 1,100' in elevation on Warden sandy silt loam soils with north south row orientation. The canopy is trained VSP with the west side left to “flop” to protect the grapes from the hot afternoon sun. Shoot thinning and green thinning occur to ensure an even, concentrated crop. Perhaps it is the elevation, or the soils, but this vineyard gives us some of the best balanced fruit we work with.
